Jewellery Design Techniques - ART 102

Jewellery Design

This "hands on" creative jewellery design program will teach you the most popular techniques for making fashion jewellery. Students will have the opportunity to design and create custom earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Emphasis will be placed on the proper usage of hand tools and appropriate material choice. We will bring you up to speed with the industry's stringent standards for creating jewellery of the highest quality of craftsmanship and materials. Best of all, you will finish each workshop with a brand new handmade piece of jewellery for you by you!

Pearl Knotting - Create Your Own Pearl Necklace

In this workshop, students will learn the traditional Chinese technique of Pearl Knotting! The workshop will cover basic and more advanced techniques involved in Pearl Knotting. Students will be taught how to choose the proper colours and sizes of silk, how to use french wire and receive instruction on pearl identification. The class will also have the opportunity to practice pearl knotting with an array of quality materials such as fresh water pearls and gems. Graduates will leave Pearl Knotting with their very own, hand crafted Pearl Necklace! Students will also be given additional materials for practice and later use.

Beginner Beading

This workshop will explore the basic techniques involved in creating and designing beaded jewellery. Students will learn to assemble beaded pieces with chains, links, charms and closures using an array of high quality materials such as leather, silk, suede, wire, etc. The course will also touch on the proper usage of hand tools, and the importance of choosing appropriate materials and closures. Students will also have a chance to learn some advanced jewellery making techniques such as closures of multiple strands, and more complex necklace, bracelet and earring styles. Be your own jeweller!

Beginner Wiring

Upon completion of this workshop, you will be well versed in the basic techniques involved in hand wiring. This tutorial will include wrapping, wiring pendants, hammering wire, crocheting with wire and more! These techniques will allow you to create chains from wire, wire pendants, and make advanced level hand wired bracelets, earrings and necklace projects. We will bring your skills to par with the industry standards of classic and contemporary wiring techniques; A must know for all jewellery-loving fashionistas!

Chandelier Earrings

Learn how to make your very own fabulous Chandelier Earrings! Each student will have the opportunity to design and create their very own pair. In the process, students will be taught various jewellery making techniques such as hand wiring and assembling a full frame for earrings of varying sizes and styles. Students are encouraged to be creative and unique in their selection of colour, design and size. Materials used in this workshop will include semiprecious gemstones, freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals and sterling silver or gold filled metals.

Charm Bracelet or Necklace Wrap

Create your own Charm Bracelet or Necklace Wrap! Each student will have the opportunity to design their own piece by choosing varying colour combinations and charm patterns for this very versatile piece. In the process, students will learn basic hand wiring techniques, including wiring charm drops, creating links and finishing closures. Materials used for this project will include a selection of gems, crystals and freshwater pearl charms as well as 100% leather wraps. Students will also choose from 14k gold filled or sterling silver findings from which to make their one-of-a-kind piece!

Cascade Necklaces

In this jewellery workshop you will create a semi-precious, freshwater pearl and Swarovski crystal Cascade Cluster Necklace! In the process, you will become familiar with basic hand wiring and clustering techniques which can be used to craft cascade earrings, bracelets, teardrop pendants and hand made hairpins. Each student will have their choice from a selection of gems and pearls in addition to 14K gold filled or sterling silver findings from which to make their one-of-a-kind Cascade Necklace!
